Tom Selleck admits he was "scared to death" to be on 'Friends'

Apparently, he was "really nervous" during the filming but recalled how Courteney Cox made him feel welcome.

Tom Selleck, who famously played Dr. Richard Burke - a sensible and charming man wooing Monica - recently revealed that he was "scared to death" to be on Friends. Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Wednesday, the 77-year-old opened up about how it feels as an actor to join a long-running series.

"(The) hardest thing is to guest on a show. I try to relax the new actors because that’s really hard to come on a show where everybody’s up to speed," noted Selleck who has been starring in Blue Bloods since 2010. He experienced this newcomer feeling when he joined the cast of Friends in its second season, according to TODAY.

"You were amazing in Friends!" assured show's host Kelly Clarkson as the audience erupted in applause. "I wasn’t amazing at what they call the table read," noted Selleck. Clarkson continued with the compliments as she said, "Who cares? Bad rehearsal. Good show. That was so good. That’s literally the thing I feel like people comment about all the time–(when) Monica’s on your voicemail, breathing."

But when she asked Selleck if he enjoyed filming the iconic sitcom, the actor revealed, "I was scared to death. I had done ‘Taxi’ a long time before, but I hadn’t done a sitcom." Apparently, he was "really nervous" during the filming but recalled how Courteney Cox made him feel welcome.

"Courteney’s a big help," added the star whose character went on to date Cox's character Monica after being introduced in season two. However, they ended things at the end of that season but reconciled briefly in season 3. Selleck returned for his final appearance on the show in season six in 2000. Cox appeared on the YouTube talk show Hot Ones recently and listed Selleck as one of her favorite love interests on Friends. She went on to praise him for being "the nicest and the tallest."

Selleck went on to appreciate the cast members noting that they are friends in real life too. "That group is just an incredible group of friends. They obviously became friends in life as well as on the show, and it shows. It was a wonderful place to work and we ended up doing about nine (episodes)," Selleck said, who was left "speechless" when asked to continue his guest arc as he was only supposed to film three episodes.

Last year, during HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion Selleck was one of many recurring stars who joined the star cast to celebrate. During this nearly two-hour special in 2021, the actor was seen greeting everyone after Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Co were asked to identify Richard's voicemail.
