Billy Bob Thornton ghosted fiancée Laura Dern and Left to marry Angelina Jolie | “It’s like a sudden death”

Bob and Jolie were shooting a move together when they fell in love and decided to marry.

Laura Dern's first engagement to actor Billy Bob Thornton ended in a shocking manner.

Dern, born on February 10, 1967, into Hollywood royalty to actor father Bruce Dern and actress Diane Ladd, made her debut in 1974's Love Doesn't Live Here Anymore opposite her mother. She went on to work in several small films before Rambling Rose (1991), which became a legendary performance, per IMDB. The oscar-nominated actor is well-known for her role in the Jurassic Park series.

On the sets of Jurrasic Park, she started dating co-actor Jeff Goldblum, however, their relationship did not last and they broke up in 1997. The same year, she met Thornton during a performance on the Ellen show. They immediately started dating and had a whirlwind romance while Thornton was divorcing his fourth wife. However, his role in 1999’s Pushing Tin, changed the course of the couple's relationship.

Thornton had proposed to Dern and they were living together when he met his co-actor Angelina Jolies on the sets of the movie, per Nine Digital. Dern claims that the actor left their house without explanation and ghosted her. He married Angelina Jolie the next thing she knew. Dern told Talk magazine in 2000, "I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I've never heard from him again. It's like a sudden death. For no one has there been any closure or clarity."

Jolie and Thornton married on May 5, 2000, shortly after shooting together for Pushing Tin. When it comes to their relationship, the newlyweds were never hesitant. They would frequently walk the red carpet together, notably carrying vials of each other's blood around their necks. Dern and Thornton have not seen one other since he ghosted her in favor of his co-star, with the exception of an awkward almost-encounter at the 2017 Golden Globes awards presentation during which they did not make eye contact, per CheatSheet.

Thornton did make a weak apology to Dern in an interview with Guardian in 2001, "Others may say that you left our girl and married someone else. But it made me happy and somebody else happy. I’m sorry it caused pain." Thornton also admitted to the outlet that he'd "f*cked up a lot of things" and been wrong in relationships, but claimed he didn't believe in couple's counseling because he didn't enjoy to "work on things."

Jolie and Thornton's marriage came to an end in 2002. Two years later, on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jolie and a married Brad Pitt became connected, jeopardizing his marriage to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston.

Dern married musician Ben Harper after her shocking separation from Thornton. In 2013, the couple divorced. The 55-year-old actress has been dating but not has married since then. Despite vowing never to marry again in 2008, on October 22, 2014, Thornton married movie puppeteer Connie Angland.
