The actor apologized to his fellow nominees, attendees of the show, and all the viewers for his violent actions.
On Monday, actor Will Smith finally broke his silence and apologized publicly to Chris Rock and everyone who witnessed his assault on the comedian at the 94th Academy Award ceremony, Sunday. "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable," read a statement he posted on his Instagram account.
"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness," it continued.
Smith, who won his first Oscar playing the father of tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams, apologized to "the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees, and everyone watching around the world." He also noted, "I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us."
The 53-year-old stunned viewers across the globe on Sunday night when he walked onto the stage and hit an unsuspecting Rock across the face before shouting, "Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth." His reaction was a result of a joke that the comedian had made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, according to Huff Post.
Will Smith may have won an Oscar, but Chris Rock has earned priceless Respect in the manner he conducted himself after that assault!— HOMELESS CATS (@BalyMaria) March 28, 2022

"Jada, can't wait for G.I. Jane 2," said Rock drawing similarities between Demi Moore's look in the said film and Jada, who has previously opened up about her struggle with alopecia. Just a week before this award ceremony, the Matrix: Resurrections actress confidently said, "I don't give two craps what people think of this bald head of mine. Because guess what? I love it."
But she seemed to be extremely unimpressed when Rock cracked a joke about her appearance. What happened next has been viewed millions of times on social media. Despite being in a state of shock, the comedian attempted to remain calm. "Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me," he joked but was interrupted by Smith who dared him to say another word about his wife.
Will Smith said “Not Today”. A man big enough to absolutely floor him, slapped him softly enough that Chris barely moved, because he made fun of his wife’s alopecia on a world stage. Don’t say #protectBlackwomen for two years and then only condemn Will here. Come on… pic.twitter.com/6aTfKlNynN— Jameela Jamil 🌈 (@jameelajamil) March 28, 2022
Later in the evening when the King Williams star was awarded an Oscar, he cried and apologized to his fellow nominees and the academy but not to the person he had assaulted. As for Rock, he refused to press charges against the actor but the Academy has since condemned Smith's violent actions and said that it would launch a review into the incident.
"We have officially started a formal review around the accident and will explore further actions and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, standards of conduct, and California law," it declared. While many celebrities have weighed in about the violent incident, Smith's mother admitted she was taken aback by her son's behavior, according to ABC News.
"He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime... I've never seen him do that," said Carolyn Smith, who assured that the controversial moment does not define her son.
