Everyone who saw the couple on set could see that the love Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have for each other is authentic and filled with respect.
It has been nearly six decades since Kurt Russell made his onscreen debut, and now, after a long and illustrious career, the actor might have given fans the very last role he will ever play.
When he stepped into the boots of Santa Claus for the 2018 Netflix movie, Christmas Chronicles, Russell seemed like he was born for the role. The 69-year-old actor perfectly embodied the role of the much-loved character that every child fell in love with when they were young. And with the glorious beard he grew out for the role, he might even make you believe in Santa again!
After playing Santa Claus in the movie's sequel, Christmas Chronicles 2, Russell seems to be more than happy to lay his acting career to rest, according to the film's director, Chris Columbus.
"He said to me, 'I want to walk into the sunset, this being the last role I play,'" Columbus told Yahoo Entertainment. "He wants to continue doing it. Deep down into his soul, he’s committed to this role. That means eight weeks growing the beard with little additional flourishes, working with the script every night before he shoots with me."
"It’s an intense commitment. And he takes it very seriously," added Columbus, who also directed Home Alone and Harry Potter.
This was also the first time Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, who have been together for over 37 years, starred together on the big screen in over three decades. While it was only a cameo for Hawn as Mrs Claus, the sequel released Christmas 2020 shows the power couple together in more prominence.
Compared to the roles Russell has played in the past, the role of Santa Claus might seem like a strange choice for the actor. But he has shown great commitment to the holiday movie series and helped write a backstory of roughly 200 pages for his character, according to Insider.
What makes Christmas Chronicles 2 all the more special is watching him act alongside his longtime partner, Goldie Hawn. His partner in real life brings the role of Mrs Claus to life with her incredible acting, and given the fact that Russell and Hawn have raised a beautiful family in over three decades together only adds to their on screen chemistry.
As was experienced by those who got to work with the two in the movie together, Russell and Hawn bring great energy and "a lot of laughter" to the set. From the movie director to the actors and even the crew who helped make the world of Santa Claus seem as realistic as it can get, everyone could see that the love Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have for each other is authentic and filled with respect.
"There’s a tremendous amount of respect there and a tremendous amount of love and trust, partially because they’ve been together for so long," Columbus told People. "They just get along beautifully."
When Russell spoke to Global News in 2018 about how special the role of Santa Claus was to him, "This movie for me is like a love letter to my dad. He was our Santa Claus. We never knew if he was Santa Claus or if he was just really close to Santa Claus. We didn’t know if he was just our dad being Santa Claus because secretly it was always shrouded in mystery. Wonderful, wonderful mystery. He was just fantastic."
Back then, as he spoke about the first movie, Russell revealed that reading the scriptbrought back not just the memories he had with his family growing up, but also with Goldie Hawn and their children. "I began to call back on the wonderful generations of the legend of Santa Claus and my own family, from my grandparents to my parents, to me, to my children with our family with Goldie [Hawn] and I share. I loved the opportunity as an actor to find out about Santa Claus. And I immediately said to myself, ‘I want to do the real guy.'"
Russell's heavy involvement in the making of Christmas Chronicles 2 also included him coming up with the best line that Hawn delivers in the film. When one of the characters, Jack, tells her, "I'll never forget you," Hawn's character, Mrs. Claus, replies: "Oh, you will from time to time, and that's how it should be."
"That's a line that Kurt wrote," Columbus shared. "Goldie is so great when she delivers it."
Talking about Russell's dedication to the role, the filmmaker told Yahoo Entertainment, "When Kurt Russell plays Santa Claus, he writes 170 pages about the guy’s backstory and mythology. That is an actor’s commitment. He is committed to this role in a way that you would expect [Robert] De Niro to be committed to Jake LaMotta [in Raging Bull]. When you see that kind of passion in an actor, to play a role that some people don’t take seriously, you realise I want to go there."
