The mother called 911 after the fatal shooting at around 4:30 a.m.

A 16-year-old girl has died after her father allegedly shot her because he mistakenly thought she was an intruder. Janae Hairston from Columbus, Ohio, was shot in the garage of her house. Her mother called 911 and told the operator that the father had opened fire because he thought she was an intruder. According to The Washington Post, the mother made the call after the shooting at around 4:30 a.m on Wednesday. The security system was activated and the father had thought someone was breaking into the house. The recording of the call shows that the father asked his daughter what she was doing. Both the mother and the father beg the girl to wake up. According to authorities, she was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

An investigation is currently underway and The Franklin County Prosecutor’s office is expected to review the case. Deputy Chief Tim Becker, head of CPD’s Investigative Unit said, “in any case, if you are the one pulling the trigger on a gun it is really important to know what your target is.” He also said that he understands what the parents must be going through, saying that “These kids have such a bright future in front of them. To have that prematurely taken away is extra tragic.”

Janae Hairston is survived by her parents as well as her 10-year-old sister. The family's neighbor, Jeff Hodge, had recently lost his grandson to a murder just a few months ago on the southeast side. Hodge said he can understand how difficult this loss is for the family. “It hurts bad because they are real good friends with us. Mom and Dad and the girl. We knew them all. My wife was crying, you know. Janae was friends with my grandson, he was killed two days after his birthday on Halloween night,” said Hodge. “Just beginning life. I just don’t understand it. My grandson was only 21. He has two babies. I got two great-grand babies that have no father," Hodge said.
