The mother and baby's bodies were found days later after her 17-year-old son informed the police about her.

Trigger warning: The story contains details of child abuse that might be distressing to some readers.

Using rat poison, a man took the lives of his wife and their three-month-old baby and buried their bodies more than 70 miles away from where they lived. The 36-year-old man, Luiz Edivaldo de Souza, allegedly contaminated his wife's food with rat poison, and after the mother of his child, Josiele Lopes, consumed the spiked food, she went on to breastfeed her three-month-old baby boy. Josiele was completely unaware that she was poisoning the little one and participating in Luiz's plot to kill them.

After feeding her son the contaminated breast milk, Josiele started to feel unwell and told her husband she needed medical attention. Under the pretext of going to the hospital, Luiz got in the car with his wife and their son, but instead of taking them to a doctor, the husband drove 73 miles (118 kilometers) away from their residence in Itapema, Brazil. By the time they reached the spot, the innocent mother and son were dead, and Luiz buried them both together.

Eventually, Josiele and her son were reported missing on September 15. Luiz used this time to send messages from his wife's phone to her relatives, pretending to be Josiele and blocking them all from her contact list. It was Josiele's 17-year-old son who finally raised the alarm and informed the police about not hearing from his mother for a while. As investigations began, the police found the bodies of the missing mother and son on September 23, 2020, according to The Sun.

Officers concluded that the mother's food was spiked with rat poison, which ended up killing both her and her baby boy. Investigators also believe that Luiz committed the grave crime as a response to his wife wanting to end their relationship.

In October, Luiz was charged with homicide and in April 2021, the court ruled that the husband will face a trial by jury in connection with ending the lives of his wife and children, according to the Daily Mail. Another incident that took place in Bavaria, Germany, saw a man trying to kill his wife by poisoning her glass of wine because she was too old to have children.

Before the murder attempt, the husband and wife began growing apart after losing their 20-year-old son to cancer. The couple would rarely eat or sleep together, but on some evenings, they would sit together and watch TV whilst sipping on wine. Eventually, the husband decided to "get rid" of his wife because she was too old to have more children. She was also against the idea of him fathering another child with another woman, according to The Local. Since he thought divorce would be an expensive affair, the husband decided to lace her glass of wine with rat poison instead.

After the attempted murder, the wife reportedly did not suffer any long-term effects, and the husband was sentenced to 12 years in jail.
