The Presidential couple retreated to their vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, to spend some quiet, quality time together.
On Thursday, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden turned 70 and she decided to celebrate the occasion with her husband and POTUS, Joe Biden at the beach. The Presidential couple retreated to their vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, to spend some quiet, quality time together. "She'll be in Rehoboth having a quiet day with the president," the first lady's spokesman told PEOPLE of her plan. Apparently, they weren't joined by any of their friends or family members.
Per Associated Press, Dr. Biden arrived at the beach house in Delaware first to mark her milestone birthday. 78-year-old President Biden arrived later on Wednesday night. On FLOTUS's big day the weather was reportedly "warm," sunny, and breezy with the temperature reaching around 79 degrees. Taking full advantage of the pleasant climate, the Bidens took their bikes out during the early afternoon. They rode along the Gordons Pond Trail, in the Cape Henlopen State Park, as bystanders wished Dr. Biden a very happy birthday and even sang to her.
The happy couple was photographed smiling as they waved at people who stood on the side to watch them ride their bikes down the trail. Both are expected to get back to Washington. D.C., today i.e. Friday. This isn't the first time that the couple stepped out of the White House to spend some time together. They either head to Camp David or make their way to Delaware to take a step back and relax. The couple reportedly purchased the Delaware beach house in 2017 for $2.7 million. The home is situated just blocks away from the Atlantic Ocean and Vogue described it as "a rambling, three-story Colonial painted the color of just-washed denim."
During the 2019 interview, Dr. Biden revealed the beach house was exactly the kind of place she had in mind for a vacation home. "I wanted it to be the kind of place where you can come in your wet bathing suit and bare feet and I can just take the broom and brush out the sand," she shared. "And that's what this is. Everything's easy." There's a sign outside the house that reads: "A PROMISE KEPT." Dr. Biden explains, "The promise kept was actually this house. Because he kept saying, 'When I write my book, I'll buy you a beach house.'" The pair signed an $8 million three-book deal after Biden, who was Vice President at the time, left office.
For years people have adored the Bidens for the strong bond they share as a family. They have been a pillar for each for decades now. During their first interview in the White House, the couple reflected on their marriage and shared how they have managed to stay strong despite the challenges and pressure that come with being in politics. "She has a backbone like a ramrod... Thank God that when I'm really down, she steps in, and when she's really down, I'm able to step in. We've been really supportive of one another..." shared President Biden. Meanwhile, Dr. Jill noted, "All that we've been through together—the highs, the lows and certainly tragedy and loss—there's that quote that says sometimes you become stronger in the fractured places. That's what we try to achieve."
