Hunter later begged his father to put out a positive statement about his affair. "I said, 'Dad, Dad, you have to.' He said, 'Hunter, I don’t know if I should. But I’ll do whatever you want me to do,'" Hunter explained.
The grief of losing his son, Beau, to cancer is something Joe Biden has often spoken to the country about, ever since Beau's passing away in 2015. What the president had no idea about after his son's death was that his younger child, Hunter Biden, was having an affair with Beau's wife while still married to Kathleen Biden.
Striking up a relationship over their shared grief of Beau's death, Hunter began spending nights at the house of his widowed sister-in-law, Hallie Biden, as he was already kicked out from his marital home over problems he had with Kathleen, according to New York Post.
Hunter also never told his father about the relationship he was having with his late brother's wife, and the president only found out when his office was asked for a comment by a news publication about their affair. At the time, Hunter went on to beg his father to release a statement about how he and Jill Biden supported their relationship.
"I said, 'Dad, Dad, you have to.' He said, 'Hunter, I don’t know if I should. But I’ll do whatever you want me to do,'" Hunter said, as quoted by The New Yorker.
"I said, 'Dad, if people find out, but they think you’re not approving of this, it makes it seem wrong. The kids have to know, Dad, that there’s nothing wrong with this, and the one person who can tell them that is you.'"
Indeed, President Biden and his wife did go on to release a statement about giving the couple their blessings.
"We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness... They have mine and Jill’s full and complete support and we are happy for them," said the Biden couple's statement at the time.
In a new memoir called Beautiful Things which is releasing on April 6, Hunter confesses about how his wife and the mother of his three daughters, Kathleen, also didn't get the chance to hear about the affair from him first, according to New York Post. While their marriage was already going through a rough period, Kathleen stumbled upon messages on his iPad to find out he was cheating on her.
"The book admits that this was the final straw for Kathleen," an insider, familiar with Hunter's new memoir, told The Sun. "She’d tried for years to help him beat his addiction to crack cocaine and booze. But then she found out he was sleeping with his brother’s wife. She said he was a sicko."
Ever since he was young, Hunter struggled with addiction, and the memoir covers details about it, including how he had his first drink at the age of 8, and how at the age of 14, he once ran out of church to vomit because of the sheer amount of beer he had consumed at the time. The book also talks about how Hunter "hung out with strippers, con artists and junkies" after his bitter breakup with Kathleen.
Also through the book, Hunter defends the relationship he had with Hallie from 2016 to 2018, as the publishing insider said, "Hunter claims it started because they needed each other. She was grieving her husband’s painful death and he was making his latest attempt to detox."
