"I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three," the estranged father said.
When Goldie Hawn's ex-husband, Bill Hudson, walked out of her children's lives, she was determined to be the strong and independent figure she knew her children needed. Litte did she know then that her her two kids, Kate and Oliver would grow up with a loving father figure after all, when Kurt Russell stepped in and filled the shoes. But the "41-year-old issue" in the family is still something that Hawn's daughter and actress, Kate Hudson still thinks about even years after her biological father abandoned them.
Between the years of 1976 to 1982, Hawn was married to Bill Hudson and their separation led to him having a strained relationship with Kate Hudson and her older brother, Oliver Hudson.
"He was around when [my brother, Oliver Hudson, and I] were young, it sort of teetered out," Kate Hudson told Closer Weekly.
In the same interview, Kate Hudson admitted that her turbulent relationship with her father contributed to the failures she has had in her love life. "I think that’s like the age-old psychological core issue for any situation," the 41-year-old actress shared. "Anybody who has had an experience with a parent that is absent, it’s going to manifest."
After Bill Hudson and Hawn separated, their two children grew up barely knowing their father, and previously, Kate Hudson has acknowledged that Russell has been there for them when their own father wasn't.
"[Bill Hudson] doesn’t know me from a hole in the wall. But I don’t care. I have a dad [Russell]," she told Vanity Fair, as quoted by HuffPost. "The bottom line is, you call your kids on their f**king birthday. I’m glad I had a dad who was there on my birthday."
in 2015, Oliver Hudson put up a photo on Instagram for Father's Day, calling out his estranged father for abandoning them as children. "Happy Abandonment Day," he captioned it. The post enraged Bill Hudson and soon after that, he gave an interview with the Daily Mail where he revealed he was cutting ties with his children completely.
"I say to them now, 'I set you free,'" Bill Hudson declared. "I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognise Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth."
Although their relationship has always had problems, Kate Hudson revealed that she forgave her father.
"I think forgiveness in any aspect is something that is complex," she previously told Howard Stern, as quoted by E! "It is the greatest tool to be able to separate that attachment. So for me, I recognize whatever those issues are is something he has to live with. That must be painful for him and I forgive him."
Today, Kate Hudson shares a tight bond with Hawn, Russell, and her siblings. But she still finds the thought of her father and his other children crossing her mind.
"You know what I've been thinking about lately? Dad," she said as she chatted with her brother, Oliver Hudson in a January, 2021 episode of their podcast, Sibling Revelry, according to People.
"I've been thinking about our sisters that we don't spend any time with and our brother—brothers. We've got four siblings we don't spend any time with," she went on to say.
Not having her biological father in her life has had a lasting impact, and she added, "I have a great family, I have a beautiful mother, I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge, huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life, but it doesn't take away from the fact that we didn't know our dad. People sometimes need to hear that they're not alone in that."
