Melinda Gates opens up about divorce from Bill Gates: 'I couldn't trust what we had'

Bill and Melinda Gates tied the knot on Jan. 1, 1994, and share three children.

Bill and Melinda Gates married on the Hawaiian island of Lanai on Jan. 1, 1994. They share three children: son Rory John, 22, and daughters Phoebe Adele, 19, and Jennifer Katharine, 26. Last year, the billionaire Microsoft co-founder, 66, and the philanthropist and former general manager at Microsoft, 57, decided to part ways after nearly three decades of marriage.

The pair announced their separation last year in a statement: "After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives," they said, in reference to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which they founded in 2000 and is now worth over $40 billion. "We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life," they concluded in the statement.

Recently, Melinda opened up about the divorce and said that there "wasn't one moment" that led to their split in a preview of CBS Mornings' exclusive interview with the philanthropist. "I certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we had worked through some of that," said the author and women's advocate referring to an affair Bill had 20 years ago with a staffer. "It wasn't one moment or one specific thing that happened. There just came a point in time where there was enough there that I realized it just wasn't healthy, and I couldn't trust what we had," the mother-of-three added.

Melinda also admitted that she went through a rollercoaster of emotions after their split. She said she shed "a lot of tears for many days," and recalled lying on the carpet thinking, "How can this be? How can I get up? How am I gonna move forward?" She also felt anger. "That's part of the grieving process," she said. "You're grieving a loss of something you thought you had and thought you had for your lifetime." "I mean, this is painful stuff," she continued. "And at the end of the day though, I started on this journey of healing, and I feel like I'm starting to get to the other side. And I do feel like I'm turning a page in the chapter now. I mean, it's 2022 and I'm actually really excited about what's to come and life ahead for me."
