"God gives us, to also support the most unprotected," said the mayor.
Days after his birth, a newborn was abandoned with a heartbreaking note on a pavement in the city of Tlaltenango, in Zacatecas, Mexico. The baby boy was found inside a pizza box, wrapped in a blanket.
Next to the one-week-old infant was a note that seemed to have been written by the baby's grandmother, as reported by The Sun.
"Take care of my grandson. My daughter died while giving birth and I don't have [a way] to support him and I hope he has a better life and God forgive me," the note said.
After he was found, the newborn was taken to the hospital so that doctors could make sure his health was not in any danger. Once social services were made aware of the abandoned infant, the Civil Protection agency made an announcement on Facebook, with the heartbreaking note that contained the only information they knew about the baby, according to local reports.
"Life shapes you but it does not prepare you for situations like this," the post said.
The agency also started receiving messages from people who showed interest in adopting the baby but the agency said, "We are not the appropriate channel," as reported by Independent. But soon enough, the news about the abandoned baby reached the right people as it spread across the country. It also reached the office of the mayor of Tlaltenango, Miguel Ángel Varelo Pinedo.
The mayor did much more than just share the story or write a few words about the incident. Along with expressing his regret to hear that the baby was abandoned out of desperation and the lack of finances, the mayor also revealed that he would take care of all the expenses related to the baby.
"It's sad to hear that a baby is abandoned due to a lack of financial resources," the mayor wrote on social media, according to The Sun. "This beauty was found today [Thursday]. Beyond the message, this is when we should show solidarity and take care of the baby."
Going on to mention how he is taking responsibility of the child's finances, the mayor added, as quoted by Independent, "I’ll take care of the baby’s spending for as long as it takes. God gives us, to also support the most unprotected. All the more reason this beautiful child is not guilty of anything. Rest in peace, your holy mother, and God forgive your grandmother."
On his path of having a new home, the little one was baptized and given the name Ángel Gabriel. Currently, he is still being looked after by the concerned authorities, and the mayor hopes that somebody within the region would come forward to welcome Ángel Gabriel into their family. It was reported that he even spoke to the state governor, Alejandro Tello about the baby.
The mayor added that he would follow up to ensure that a set of "exemplary parents" would open their doors to the little one and adopt him.
