Prince William opens up about an '80s pop song Diana would sing in the car: "It felt like a real family moment"

Prince William says that he secretly enjoys that particular song to this day.

Years after her death, Prince William still holds onto a very special memory of his mother that helped ease his anxieties over the years. The father-of-three recently opened up about a song that the late Princess Diana would play for him, in a bid to promote physical and mental wellbeing in an episode of Apple Fitness+'s Time to Walk series.

As he walked through his grandmother Queen Elizabeth's Sandringham Estate he shared three of his favorite songs and some precious personal moments that have played a huge role in shaping his life today. Of the three songs he chose, there was one that his mother Diana would play in the car for her children on their way to school.

"When I was younger, Harry and I, we were at boarding school. And my mother used to play all sorts of songs to kind of wile away the anxiety of going back to school," he recalled. "And one of the songs I massively remember and has stuck with me all this time, and I still, to this day, still quite enjoy secretly, is Tina Turner's 'The Best' because sitting in the backseat, singing away, it felt like a real family moment."

"And my mother, she'd be driving along, singing at the top of her voice. And we'd even get the policeman in the car, he'd be occasionally singing along, as well. You'd be singing and listening to the music right the way out into the gates of school when they dropped you off," he noted according to PEOPLE

"And, and that's when reality kind of sunk in that you really were going back to school because before that, you're lost in songs. You'll want to play it again just to keep that family moment going," he said adding how he still listens to the song which immediately transports him to the beautiful memories he shared with his mother. "When I listen to it now, it takes me back to those car rides and brings back lots of memories of my mother."

Inspired by the impact that these musical school rides had on him, William now creates special moments with his own kids, Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and 3-year-old Prince Louis. "Most mornings there's a massive fight between Charlotte and George as to what song is played in the morning," he shared.

"And I have to, now, basically prioritize that one day someone does this one, and another day it's someone else's turn. So George gets his go, then Charlotte gets her go. Such is the clamor for the music," said Prince William noting that Shakira's Waka Waka is one of the songs his children are loving at the moment.
