Darren McGrady, who has been a chef for the late Princess Diana, as well as Princes William and Harry, shared a video on how one could recreate their own royal afternoon tea at home.
Old habits die hard. At least that's the case for Queen Elizabeth who has had the same jam sandwich every day since she was just 5 years old. Her former private chef of 15 years, Darren McGrady, made the revelation on his YouTube channel which boasts over 227,000 subscribers.
McGrady, who has been a chef for the late Princess Diana, as well as Princes William and Harry, shared a video on how one could recreate their own royal afternoon tea at home. He went on share the types of sandwiches that Buckingham Palace offered. Having worked at the palace since he was a young boy, chef McGrady opened up about garden parties that would be held there with as many as 6,000 people in attendance.
Thankfully the royal chefs only had to cater for the royal tea tent and not for the others, During such events, there would always be one sandwich on the menu and the delicacy was "jam penny." It was something the Queen was served as a little girl every day for Afternoon Tea, according to McGrady.
Revealing the recipe of this simple sandwich, McGrady said it was "just bread and jam with a little butter, usually strawberry jam." He added, "We'd make the jam at Balmoral Castle with gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens." In the video, McGrady can be seen spreading jam and butter on bread slices before sandwiching them together and cutting it into circles. "They were called pennies, after the size of the old English penny," he noted.
The other popular afternoon tea sandwich recipes involved fillings of tomato and cheese and cucumber with mint cream cheese, according to Daily Mail. One viewer has an interesting thought after watching the video.
"The weird thing is, going school in England anyone who had jam sandwiches was called poor! And here I am finding out The Queen eats them, wish I could show the bullies this haha! A lot of that food seems so simple but just is a reminder there’s so much naturally nice things no need for all this Just Eat and Deliveroo!" they wrote in the comment section.
Others noted that they would definitely go for something fancier, especially if they were the Queen. "The Queen has eaten a jam sandwich every day since she was a kid. A bloody jam sandwich? Boring! If I was queen I’d definitely be more boujee than that," they wrote.
