"Her duties include greeting each customer at the door, rolling over endless belly rubs, sniffing out treats within pockets of our customers, and mopping the floor with her very fluffy tail," revealed owner Stacy Gould.
Stacy Gould and her family knew they wanted to open a bookstore but weren't very clear about the logistics of it all. But Gould knew one thing for sure, that she and her family dog, Ruby, would be the only ones going to the store every day as her kids had school and her husband had work to get to.
Now Ruby, who means the world to her family, is an extremely friendly and sweet dog, and taking her to the bookstore with her each day was a no-brainer for Gould. She knew anyone who meets Ruby, even if it was the first time, falls in love instantly because the pooch loves saying hi to new people.
The family believed that a bookstore where she could meet many people would appeal to her, and in many ways, it would be hers. That's why named it after her: Ruby's Books. "Ruby would have to come with me every day to the store, so we thought, 'Why don't we name the store after Ruby?'" shared Gould while speaking with The Dodo.
But Ruby isn't just there for show but has many roles at the store. She is a co-owner, manager, and the official greeter for Ruby’s Books and the golden retriever takes her job extremely seriously. So much so that the store has become an integral part of the community since opening its doors just a year and a half back. "The customers love Ruby and she has become quite the staple here on Sutter Street. We often joke that the people come for the books but stay for the dog!" noted Gould.
"Her duties include greeting each customer at the door, rolling over for endless belly rubs, sniffing out treats within pockets of our customers, mopping the floor with her very fluffy tail [and] reading (well she pretends [to]) alongside the kiddos in our children's section," added Gould.
Her concerned family has also made sure that Ruby doesn't feel burdened by all this responsibility and to maintain a good work-life balance she doesn't go there every single day of the week. Per reports, she works from Monday to Friday and spends the weekend with her family.
Ruby loves the responsibilities she has at the store and takes immense pride in doing them, including sprawling across the floor and taking the occasional naps. As for her family, they love their doggo whole-heartedly and are glad to have found a way to share their gem of pet and all her joys with the community.
