Sean Connery "got his final wish to slip away without any fuss" after battling Dementia in his dying days

"I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted."

Hollywood lost one of its finest actors of all time on October 31, 2020 — Sir Sean Connery. The Scottish actor, who was arguably the best James Bond the spy thriller franchise has seen, and was one of the most revered veteran actors in the world of movies.

The 90-year-old actor passed away in Nassau in the Bahamas. According to BBC, his son Jason Connery said his father "had many of his family, who could be in the Bahamas, around him" when he died overnight.

His wife, Micheline Roquebrune, who was with him in the final hour, revealed what his final few months were like. "He had dementia and it took its toll on him. He got his final wish to slip away without any fuss," said Micheline.

Married to the Oscar-winning star for 45 years, she said, "It was no life for him. He was not able to express himself latterly. At least he died in his sleep and it was just so peaceful. I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted."

The 91-year-old Moroccan-French painter was his second wife. Alluding to the life she shared with the star, Micheline said, "He was gorgeous and we had a wonderful life together. He was a model of a man. It is going to be very hard without him, I know that. But it could not last forever and he went peacefully," as reported by Daily Mail.

According to Nicki Swift, Micheline and Sean met in 1970 at a golf tournament. Sean, who had separated from his first wife Diane Cilento, was smitten. Talking about the first time they met, Micheline said, "I saw this man from the back, and of course, he had a fine physique. But that first day I didn't know who he was or anything about him." Continuing, she said, "Then I dreamed I saw this man. I was in his arms. And I thought 'At last, peace.' The next day I went back to the tournament and that was that!"

However, it took the actor two years to reach out to Micheline again. Eventually, cupid struck and they started seeing each other. However, she had 3 kids from a previous marriage, who she had to bring up. So they couldn't be near each other much for a while.

"In the early days, it was difficult for us to see each other. We were in separate queues coming off different flights. There was a partition and underneath I saw these feet. I immediately recognized them and tried to get through to see her but it wasn't allowed," said Sean, referring to his early romantic days with "the love of my life."

They married a few years later, in 1975. Despite Sean's alleged cheating scandals, the couple managed to have a long married life.

Speaking about coping with his father's death, Jason said, "We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time. A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had, as an actor."

Meanwhile, speaking of the funeral ceremony for the actor, the representatives stated, "There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the virus has ended."
