Shaquille O'Neal opens up about his divorce from ex-wife Shaunie: "She was awesome but I was bad"

Shaquille O'Neal blames himself not his ex-wife Shaunie for their broken marriage.

NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal opened up about his divorce from ex-wife Shaunie O'Neal during an episode of The Pivot Podcast. O'Neal spoke about his career, regrets, and relationships, including the one he had with Shaunie. The former Los Angeles Lakers player admitted that he was the reason why they split up in 2009. O'Neal and Shaunie tied the knot in 2002 and their divorce was finalized in 2011. "I've never talked about this, and I'm glad you guys asked because I don't mind talking about this, but I was bad," he explained according to PEOPLE

"She was awesome. She really was. It was all me," added the 50-year-old basketball pro who didn't want to discuss "what I was doing" but noted that "I wasn't protecting her and protecting those vows." He added, "Sometimes when you live that double life, you get caught up. I'm not going to say it was her; it was all me."

O'Neal went on to talk about the extra efforts his former wife put into their relationship before they parted ways. "She did exactly what she was supposed to do and gave me beautiful kids, take care of the house, take care of the corporate stuff. It was just all me. Sometimes, when you make a lot of mistakes like that, you can't really come back from that," he explained.

Despite the end of their romance, the former couple eventually restored their friendship and now O'Neal has nothing but compliments for her. "She was awesome, she really was. It was all me," he added. As for 47-year-old Shaunie she announced her engagement to pastor Keion Henderson last year. The two began dating in February 2020.

"Keion is an extraordinary man of God. He's wise, he's supportive, he's so loving and attentive. He loves me and my children in a way that has changed my life and my heart. He makes me want to be better every day. And I pray that I do the same for him. This love is FOREVER and I'm honored and overjoyed to do forever with him," the Basketball Wives star previously told PEOPLE.

During the podcast, O'Neal shared that he is actually happy for his ex-wife and her upcoming marriage to Henderson "She's happy now. She's about to marry a fine, young gentleman and I'm happy for her," shared O'Neal, who shares Shareef, 22, Amirah, 20, Shaqir, 19, and Me'arah, 15, with her. Shaunie has another child, son Myles, 24, from a previous marriage.
