Comedian Dave Chappelle gets attacked onstage; Chris Rock jokes, "Was that Will Smith?"

Comedian Dave Chappelle was performing at the "Netflix is a Joke" festival when he was suddenly attacked by an unidentified man.

While performing a set at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked by a member of the audience. Speaking to local station KABC, Los Angeles police said that they arrived at the "Netflix is a Joke" festival after receiving a report at around 10:45 p.m. The man, who tackled Chappelle, was reportedly armed with a fake gun that contained a knife in it. Identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, he was taken into custody immediately and charged with a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon.

"Dave Chappelle was just assaulted on stage at his Hollywood Bowl show. He was finishing up his performance when a man ran on-stage and lunged at him knocking him to the floor," wrote journalist Sharon Carpenter on Twitter. "Security and his entourage then cornered the man as Dave joked about how him getting ‘stomped’ backstage."

Reporters present at the event said that Los Angeles police and fire department personnel placed the man in an ambulance outside the venue, according to HuffPost. "When we got out of the Bowl and got our phones out, LAPD and medics were cordoning off the area and then loaded Chapelle’s attacker, who looked to be strapped in a jacket in a chair, into an ambulance. Members of the crowd cussed him out," wrote BuzzFeed News reporter Brianna Sacks alongside a video.

In other videos posted online, Chappelle can be heard joking about his attacker saying, "It was a trans man" and that he "stomped" backstage. At one point, comedian Chris Rock came on stage and subtly drew similarities between the attack and the one he was subjected to by Will Smith during this year's controversial Oscars. Smith has since been banned from attending the prestigious award ceremony for 10 years.

The Oscar winner apologized shortly after but hasn't personally reached out to Rock for his actions. "Seeing Dave Chappelle get attacked by somebody from the audience than seeing the dude get jumped by Dave Chappelle and his crew gotta be the wildest live show I’ve ever seen. Chris Rock even came on stage, embraced Dave, grabbed the mic, and said 'Will, was that you?!'" shared author Julissa Natzely Arce Raya of the moment according to the Independent

This is the third time Chris Rock has publicly made a comment about the Smith incident. Days after being assaulted on stage, Rock briefly addressed the assault during his stand-up set noting that he was "still processing" whatever happened to him during the live broadcast.
